Newton, KS

The May 21, 2013 meeting of the Newton Amateur Radio Club met in the Board Room of the Newton Public Library. In attendance were John Goerzen, Jeanne Groves, Russell Groves, David Hughes, Dan Inskeep, Charles Meisinger, Stan Stephenson, Kent Stutzman, and Jerry Williams. Guests in attendance were Steve Nelson, KD0VFJ and James Skinnell, K7EOG of Pheonix, AZ.

Meeting was called to order at 7:04PM by President Russell Groves.

Kent S read the minutes. Charles made a motion. Jerry made 2nd. Minutes were unanimously accepted.

With two new faces in the room, there was an introduction of all in attendance so everyone had a bit of information on those attending.

After several Skywarn activations and with visitors present from other areas, Russell asked for observations they had heard on the weather nets. James was quick to point out a lot of reports that did not meet criteria and unnecessary traffic. A very good discusssion followed and took a good portion of the meeting time. Most reports were being taken the previous days for areas outside of the Wichita Skywarn area, so reports were sent to other NWS offices.

Stan mentioned that Jeremy and himself would likely be the two participants from the McPherson Club. Finalizing of plans for Field Day at Stutzman Retreat June 22-23 will be at the June 18 meeting.

Russell asked James what his Club did for Field Day. His Club is usually a contingent with the Sheriff's office and they load gear on pack mules and are usually on mountain trails and not doing much radio communications during Field Day as they are typically doing real searches in the mountains in the Phoenix area. Their group ranges from 30-50 members. Other clubs operate from Superstition Mountain and other areas in Phoenix.

Russell asked about the repeapter causing problems. Charles noted there seemed to be less frequent problems with what sounds like the repeater having intermittent oscillator problems. This has been noted on all of the 2m repeaters on the K-Link system.

There is a American Veterans Traveling Tribute that is going to be in Hutchinson June 12-16. It is being brought to Hutchinson by a several groups and RCKARA will have a special event station WØL at 328 N. Van Buren at VFW Post #1381 June 13-16.

MCC Bike Ride in September. Falun Classic is usually the same day.
