Newton, KS

The February 18, 2014 meeting of the Newton Amateur Radio Club met in the Board Room of the Newton Public Library.  In attendance was .Dan Inskeep, Jerry Williams, Stan Stephenson, Russell Groves, Dave Hughes, Steve Nelson, Justin Reed, Karen Reed, Izzy & Calvin Reed, Charles Meisinger, and Jeanne Groves

Meeting was called to order at 7:08 PM by President Dave Hughes.

Motion to approve minutes as published by Russell, seconded by Dave.

Russell moved, seconded, treasurers report was approved as read.

No specific agenda.  Round table.

Russell— brought a small antenna that could be adjusted for various bands.

Russell—Email from Harvey County (Don Gruver) about the HP antenna.  One end is loose and needs to be repaired.  No rush on the fix. The club owns and maintains the antenna.  Antenna can be tuned (it’s a long vertical).  May make this a club work day to repair.  

Stan—Saturday meeting held for McPherson amateur club and the new EOC director.  EOC director gave a good presentation and Emergency Coordination Center tour.  The ECC will house the major players in an emergency.

Stan—38 year old son got his license (KD9AKI). Stan was his first contact on 20 meters via Echolink.  Also did a little antenna work.

Justin—Keep repeaters going—Ellsworth off the air.  New one at Eldorado.  Operating mobile when he can.  

Karen—discussing starting a net for Women, will have first net a 7PM on March 7 (Friday).  Topics may include Prepper, home grown food, or  Newbies.

Discussion on request for preparedness presentation at the Newton LDS church.  Aaron emailed to Stan for powerpoint presentation.

Charles—last weekend was in ARRL world wide CW DX contest.  Wall to wall DX.  There was a big pile up, he worked 57 countries.  MN QSO party a few weeks ago.  MN has 87 counties.  All activated.  15 mobiles went out.  2/3 counties logged.  Mostly on 40 and 20 meters.  ARRL centennial stations continues

Jerry—had visitors and showed them his ham set up, impressed with clarity of sound, also showed them the Derby Radio Shack.  

Dan—Won the zero section for the PSK contest, Also working on the linksys mesh system.  Software should be on Making his 80 meter antennas into 160 meters.  Seeing interference all over, too powerful too notch out.  

Jeanne—A testing session is scheduled at a meeting room at Hillsboro City Hall on March 8th, 2014 from 9am to 1 PM.  VE Amateur Extras are Russell, Jeanne, Dan, and Dave.  To publicize,  ARRL has added to their calendar.  Asked Derby Radio Shack to publish and Hillsboro Free Press.  Also submitted to Kansas and McPherson Sentinel.  Needs to be corrected on Newton ARC website.

Dave—Will be gone for March meeting.  Getting radio set up for traveling.

Discussion on various radio configurations.

Questionable on Eisenhower Marathon radio support, Justin will let us know.

Look into presentations, nets, new hams, mesh net, Tabor, rec center for kids for something different. home schooled. scout troops,  virtual schooling, Bethel, NY0T…was in Bolivia..  offer education…high schools
